Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries can purchase and own a reliable vehicle while maintaining their monthly benefits by following Social Security Administration (SSA) asset rules. Utilizing specialized financing, non-profit grants, and state vocational rehabilitation programs allows recipients to gain personal transportation without exceeding resource limits.

Key Takeaways & Asset Rules

One Primary Vehicle Exclusion: The SSA completely excludes one vehicle of any value from your $2,000 individual (or $3,000 couple) SSI resource limit if used for transportation by you or a household member.
Secondary Vehicle Limits: A second vehicle counts toward your total asset limit, meaning its equity value must stay under the allowed resource threshold to maintain benefit eligibility.
ABLE Account Funding: Save funds for a down payment using an ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) account, where savings grow tax-free and do not count against the $2,000 SSI resource limit.
Specialized Financing Options: Credit unions and non-profit lenders offer low-interest auto loans designed specifically for individuals whose main source of verifiable income is SSI or SSDI.

Assistance & Funding Option Comparison

Program Type	Funding Provider / Resource	Primary Benefit	SSI Impact Considerations
ABLE Accounts	State-sponsored savings plans	Tax-free savings for down payments or vehicle modifications	Balances up to $100,000 are completely exempt from SSI resource limits
Vocational Rehabilitation	State VR Agencies	Grants for purchasing or modifying vehicles for work/education	Direct payments to vendors prevent countable cash asset build-up
PASS (Plan to Achieve Self-Support)	Social Security Administration	Set aside SSI funds toward a car needed for employment goals	Income/assets set aside under an approved PASS plan are excluded
Non-Profit Auto Grants	Organizations like Wheels to Work	Discounted, donated, or low-cost vehicle purchasing assistance	Direct vehicle transfer qualifies under the primary car exclusion rule

3 Steps to Buying a Car on SSI

Verify Asset Exclusions: Ensure the vehicle will serve as your primary household transportation so it remains exempt under the SSA one-vehicle rule.
Establish a Qualified Savings Vehicle: Use an ABLE account or an approved SSA PASS plan to accumulate down payment funds without triggering a benefit suspension.
Secure Lender Pre-Approval: Work with credit unions or specialized lenders experienced with public benefit verification to lock in pre-approved auto financing before visiting dealerships.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will buying a car cause me to lose my monthly SSI payment?

No, as long as the vehicle is designated as your primary vehicle, its total value is completely excluded from your SSI asset limits.

Can I take out an auto loan while receiving SSI?

Yes. Auto loan proceeds used directly to purchase a car within the same month are not counted as unearned income or assets by the SSA.
