A Ring video doorbell captures footage the moment someone approaches your door, but whether you can actually review that footage later, or get anyone dispatched during a break-in, depends entirely on which subscription tier you're paying for. Ring's plans changed meaningfully in early 2026, and understanding exactly what each tier unlocks is worth doing before assuming the cheapest option covers everything you need.

What You Get Without Any Subscription

Ring doorbells and cameras function on a basic level without any paid plan at all. According to Security.org 's 2026 pricing breakdown, the free tier still delivers motion alerts and live view access through the Ring app, letting you see and speak with whoever's at your door in real time. What's missing without a subscription is anything historical: no video recording, no clip downloads, and no way to review footage after an event has already happened. For many households, this gap alone, not being able to pull up footage after a package theft or a suspicious visitor, is the reason a paid tier becomes necessary rather than optional.

The Three Core Tiers

Ring Protect breaks down into three main tiers, each building on the one below it.

Ring Protect Basic is the entry point, covering a single Ring device at one location. It adds the feature most people actually want: cloud video history, generally up to 180 days of stored footage, along with snapshot captures, person and package alerts, and the ability to download and share clips. This tier makes sense for a household with just one doorbell or camera and no broader alarm system.

Ring Protect Plus steps up to cover every Ring doorbell and camera at a single address under one subscription, rather than requiring a separate Basic plan for each device. According to a 2026 comparison from eufy, Plus also adds advanced video features, enhanced notifications, and extended warranty coverage on top of everything included in Basic. For any household with more than one Ring device, Plus is generally the more sensible choice mathematically, since stacking multiple Basic plans together quickly costs more than a single Plus subscription covering the whole property.

Ring Protect Pro sits at the top and is the only tier that adds genuine home security monitoring rather than just video and notification features. It includes everything in Plus, plus 24/7 professional monitoring for the Ring Alarm system, cellular backup connectivity in case Wi-Fi or power goes down, and local video storage through Ring Edge for cameras that support it. This is the tier that actually functions as a monitored security system rather than a video doorbell subscription, and it's the only tier where a real person or dispatch center gets involved if your alarm triggers.

What Changed in February 2026

This is the detail that catches a lot of existing Ring users off guard. According to CCTVinfo's coverage of the rate change, Amazon raised Ring Protect subscription rates by roughly 17% to 20% across every tier, effective February 1, 2026. Basic moved from $4.99 to $5.99 monthly, Plus moved from $10 to $12 monthly, and Pro moved from $20 to $24 monthly. Annual rates rose similarly, with Basic climbing from $59.99 to $69.99 and Plus from $100 to $119.99 a year.

There's an important nuance for anyone who locked in a subscription before the change. Existing subscribers on an active annual plan were generally able to retain their prior rate for the remainder of that billing cycle, and CCTVinfo notes that switching from month-to-month to an annual plan before the February 1 cutoff let subscribers hold the older, lower annual rate for a full additional year. If you're currently on a legacy rate, it's worth checking your account directly to confirm whether you're still on the old figure or have already rolled onto the new one.

Monthly vs. Annual: The Real Savings

Every tier offers a meaningful reduction for paying annually rather than monthly, and the math is worth running before deciding. Based on the post-2026 rates, paying for Basic annually at $69.99 works out to roughly $5.83 a month, a modest savings over the $5.99 monthly rate. The gap widens more noticeably on Plus, where the $119.99 annual rate averages to about $10 a month against a $12 monthly rate, effectively delivering close to two free months a year for anyone committing to the annual plan upfront. For a household confident it'll keep the subscription for a full year anyway, annual billing is close to a straightforward decision.

The \"Ring Home\" Naming Question

One point worth flagging with some caution: at least one 2026 source describes a March 2026 rebrand in which \"Ring Home\" plans began replacing the \"Ring Protect\" naming, with a restructured Basic tier priced per device rather than per location. This rebrand isn't consistently confirmed across all the sources reviewed, so if you're shopping for a plan and see \"Ring Home\" terminology rather than \"Ring Protect,\" it's worth double-checking directly on Ring's own site to confirm current plan names and structure, since naming and packaging details can shift and not every review source may reflect the most current version.

How to Pick the Right Tier for Your Household

A few practical questions narrow the decision quickly:

Do you have just one Ring device? Basic likely covers your needs, since you're not paying for multi-device coverage you won't use.

Do you have multiple Ring cameras or doorbells at one address? Plus almost always makes more financial sense than paying for multiple Basic subscriptions, since it covers unlimited devices at a single location for one flat monthly rate.

Do you have a Ring Alarm system, or want a monitored security response? Only Pro includes 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup, so if actual alarm monitoring matters to you, Basic and Plus won't get you there regardless of how many cameras they cover.

How long do you plan to keep the subscription? If you're confident you'll keep it for a full year, the annual rate on any tier delivers a real reduction over paying monthly.

What to Do If You're an Existing Subscriber

If you're already a Ring Protect subscriber and haven't checked your account since the rate change, it's worth logging in to confirm which rate you're currently being charged and whether an annual commitment could still lock in a lower figure depending on your renewal date. It's also worth reassessing whether your current tier still matches your setup, since adding a second or third Ring device after subscribing to Basic is a common reason households end up overpaying by maintaining multiple Basic subscriptions instead of switching to a single Plus plan.

FAQs

Can I use a Ring doorbell without any subscription at all?
Yes, but you'll only get live view and real-time motion alerts, with no video history, clip downloads, or recorded footage to review later.

What's the main difference between Plus and Pro?
Plus covers unlimited Ring devices at one location with advanced video features, while Pro adds 24/7 professional alarm monitoring and cellular backup on top of everything in Plus.

Did Ring's subscription rates increase recently?
Yes, rates rose across all tiers by roughly 17% to 20% effective February 1, 2026.

Is it cheaper to pay monthly or annually?
Annual billing delivers a real reduction on every tier, generally equivalent to one to two free months compared to paying month to month.

Do I need Ring Protect Pro if I only have a doorbell camera, no alarm system?
Generally no, since Pro's main added value, professional alarm monitoring, only applies if you have a Ring Alarm system to monitor in the first place.

Conclusion

Choosing the right Ring subscription tier comes down to how many devices you're covering and whether you need actual professional alarm monitoring or just video history and notifications. Basic suits a single-device household, Plus makes more financial sense for multiple cameras at one address, and Pro is the only tier that functions as a real monitored security system. With rates having risen across the board in February 2026, checking your current plan and billing cycle directly on your account is worth doing before assuming you're still on an older, lower rate.
