Grocery senior discounts have thinned out considerably over the past decade, and several major names that once ran them, including Kroger and Walmart, have phased theirs out entirely. According to Clark.com 's 2026 roundup, while many big retailers have moved away from age-based savings, a solid number of regional and national chains still maintain them, though details can vary by individual store.

Chains With Active Discount Days

Harris Teeter runs one of the more consistent programs through its Club 60 initiative. Shoppers 60 and older get 5% off groceries every Thursday, according to SavingAdvice's 2026 breakdown, with the reduction excluding items like fuel, gift cards, alcohol, and pharmacy purchases. Because it happens weekly rather than monthly, it's one of the more reliable options for retirees planning grocery runs around it.

Albertsons provides 10% off to shoppers 55 and older, typically on the first Wednesday of each month, according to SeniorSite's 2026 guide, though the exact day can shift by region since the discount is managed at the division level rather than corporate-wide.

Fred Meyer, part of the Kroger family but operating independently in the Pacific Northwest, gives 10% off select merchandise, including private-brand groceries and general goods, on the first Tuesday of each month for shoppers 55 and up.

Tops Friendly Markets runs its \"Young at Heart Day\" on the first Tuesday of every month for shoppers 60 and older, providing up to 6% off the total bill.

Brookshire's, operating across Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, publishes a straightforward 5% reduction for customers 60 and older at participating locations, requiring a request at checkout along with valid ID rather than a loyalty card.

Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace gives shoppers 55 and older 5% off on Wednesdays.

Chains That No Longer Have One

Kroger's story is one of the most commonly misunderstood. The chain ran genuine, consistent senior discount programs across several divisions in past years, but according to Budget Seniors' 2026 breakdown, these were phased out between 2017 and 2024 in favor of digital coupons and loyalty rewards that apply to shoppers of any age. As of 2026, Kroger has no company-wide senior discount. Walmart has similarly discontinued its program.

What to Confirm Before You Shop

Given how often these programs shift, or turn out to be regional rather than nationwide, it's worth calling the specific store beforehand or asking directly at customer service. According to SeniorSite's chain-by-chain verification, some widely repeated claims about certain chains, including specific percentage figures for stores like Food Lion, don't actually appear on the company's own site, which is a good reminder to verify directly rather than relying on secondhand lists.

FAQs

Do I need a loyalty card to get a senior discount at these stores?
It varies. Some chains, like Brookshire's, don't require one and only ask for ID at checkout, while others tie the reduction to a loyalty account.

What age typically qualifies for grocery senior discounts?
Most programs start at either 55 or 60, though a few set the threshold at 65, so checking the specific chain's requirement matters.

Does Publix have a senior discount?
Sources conflict on this, with some 2026 guides listing Publix as active and others finding no published program on the company's own site, so confirming directly with a local Publix is the most reliable approach.

Can senior discounts be combined with coupons?
At some chains, yes, including manufacturer coupons alongside the senior reduction, though this varies by retailer and location.

Conclusion

Grocery senior discounts are far less universal than they once were, but chains like Harris Teeter, Albertsons, Fred Meyer, and Tops Friendly Markets continue to provide real, verifiable savings on designated days. Because these programs are frequently regional and change without much notice, calling ahead or asking at the customer service desk remains the most reliable way to confirm what's actually available before building a shopping trip around it.
