Free nbn® Fibre Upgrade: Complete Guide to FTTP Upgrades

Australia’s National Broadband Network (nbn®) offers a $0 standard installation Fibre Upgrade program. This program allows eligible homes currently connected via older, copper-based infrastructure—specifically Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)—to upgrade directly to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).

FTTP delivers a direct fibre-optic line straight to your property, yielding higher speeds, lower latency, and greater connection stability compared to legacy copper connections.

What Does \"Free Upgrade\" Mean?

The $0 standard installation covers the physical work performed by NBN Co technicians to run fibre cables from the street into your home and install the required hardware.

What is Included: Standard installation of the outdoor Utility Box (PCD) and indoor Connection Box (NTD).
What is Not Included: Monthly internet plan fees, specialized/non-standard wiring requests, or purchasing a new Wi-Fi 6/7 router if your existing router is incompatible with gigabit speeds.

Key Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the $0 FTTP upgrade, your address and order must satisfy four conditions:

Eligible Address: Your property must be in an area where NBN Co has enabled full fibre rollout.
Current Connection Type: You must currently have an active FTTN or FTTC connection.
Eligible Plan Requirement: You must place an order for an eligible high-speed home internet plan through a participating Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Simple Premises Classification: The property installation pathway must be deemed standard/simple by the technician on installation day.

Eligible Speed Tiers

To trigger the free installation, ISPs require you to subscribe to a qualifying speed tier. Typical minimum tiers include:

nbn® 50/17 Home Plans: Standard home plans providing up to 50 Mbps download and 17 Mbps upload.
nbn® 100/20 & 100/40 Plans: High-speed plans suitable for multi-device households, 4K streaming, and working from home.
Superfast (500–750 Mbps) & Ultrafast (1000 Mbps): Gigabit-tier options for extreme bandwidth demands, online gaming, and large file transfers.

Step-by-Step Upgrade Process

[1. Check Address Eligibility] ➔ [2. Order Eligible Plan] ➔ [3. Technician Visit] ➔ [4. Activation]\n

Check Eligibility: Visit your preferred ISP’s portal or the NBN Co website to check if your street address is enabled for full fibre.
Select & Order Plan: Choose an eligible tier (e.g., 50/17, 100/20, or higher) with a participating retailer (such as Telstra, Optus, TPG, Superloop, Aussie Broadband, etc.).
Technician Installation: An adult (18+) must be present during the appointment. The technician will run the optical fibre line and mount the internal FTTP connection box.
Connect & Activate: Plug your Wi-Fi router into the new nbn® box to complete activation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a new router for FTTP?

Most modern routers with a WAN port work with FTTP connections. However, to achieve speeds exceeding 100 Mbps or 500 Mbps, a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 router is recommended.

How long does the installation take?

The end-to-end upgrade process typically takes between 2 to 4 weeks from the initial order date to final technician completion. Your existing internet service remains active during construction.

Is there a contract lock-in?

While NBN Co covers standard installation, individual ISPs may require you to stay on the higher-speed tier for a minimum period (or pay out a modem/installation fee if you downgrade immediately). Always review your provider’s terms.
