If you're sorting through closets and cabinets this season, don't box everything up for the landfill or a resale app just yet. Women's shelters across the country are consistently short on a handful of everyday essentials, and a home cleanout is often the easiest source for exactly what they need. According to organizations like United Way Greater Toronto and advocacy groups such as Women's Advocates, demand for certain basics rarely slows down. Here are five things worth setting aside before your next drop-off.

1. Toiletries and Hygiene Products

Toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, and combs are almost always in short supply. Unscented or sensitive-skin formulas are especially welcome, since many women arriving at shelters have allergies or skin sensitivities that make strong fragrances uncomfortable.

2. Period Care

Pads, tampons, panty liners, and reusable cups are consistently requested. Groups like the Eastern Panhandle Empowerment Center note that these supplies run out fast in shared living spaces, so even a partial box from your own stash can help someone through a difficult week.

3. New Underwear and Socks

Clean underwear and socks are among the most requested clothing items, and most shelters ask that these be new rather than used for hygiene reasons. Women who arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs often go without these basics longer than anything else.

4. Laundry Detergent

It's easy to overlook, but detergent rarely makes it onto typical donation lists even though shelters go through it constantly. Scent-free versions are particularly useful for residents managing skin conditions or sensitivities.

5. Makeup and Self-Care Items

Cosmetics might sound like a small thing during a cleanout, but they carry real weight. Having a lipstick or a bit of concealer on hand for a job interview or a court appearance can restore a sense of dignity and normalcy that's easy to take for granted.

Before dropping anything off, it's worth calling ahead. Needs shift by season and by location, and some shelters — like Women's Lunch Place — publish updated wish lists so your contribution goes exactly where it's needed most.

FAQs

Do shelters accept used clothing?
It varies by location. Many accept gently used outerwear and shoes, but items like underwear, socks, and bedding are usually requested new for hygiene reasons.

What if I don't have any of these items on hand?
A cash donation is often just as valuable, since it lets staff purchase exactly what's currently missing from their stock.

Are travel-sized toiletries useful, or only full-size ones?
Both are welcome. Travel-sized items are especially handy for women transitioning out of a shelter who need lightweight, portable supplies.

Can I donate food along with hygiene items?
Many shelters do accept non-perishable food and fresh produce, but it's best to confirm with the specific location, since storage space and dietary needs differ.

Conclusion

A routine cleanout can turn into something meaningful with just a little redirection. Toiletries, period care, new underwear, detergent, and small self-care items rarely show up in large volumes, which makes them some of the most valuable things you can hand off to a local shelter. A quick call or visit to a shelter's website before you go will confirm exactly what's needed right now, ensuring your contribution makes the biggest difference possible.
