The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company, founded in 1907 by Francis A. Bartlett, is the world’s leading scientific tree and shrub care company. Headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, Bartlett operates hundreds of local offices across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Guided by its dedicated research facility—the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories in Charlotte, North Carolina—Bartlett delivers science-based arboricultural solutions for residential, commercial, historical, and municipal properties.

Navigating Bartlett’s comprehensive arboricultural offerings—spanning diagnostic health management, structural tree pruning, soil fertilization, pest and disease management, tree risk assessments, structural cabling, emergency response, and property inventories—requires a clear operational understanding. This guide details Bartlett’s core service offerings, scientific research foundation, tree preservation strategies, and customer service standards.

1. Corporate Foundations and Scientific Research

Bartlett Tree Experts distinguishes itself in the arboricultural industry through a foundational commitment to scientific research, continuous arborist education, and diagnostic laboratory support.

The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories

Located on a 350-acre facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories serve as the scientific hub for the entire organization:

Diagnostic Clinic: Diagnostic scientists analyze plant samples, soil cores, tissue specimens, and insect pests submitted by field arborists, identifying pathogens, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental stressors.
Arboricultural Research: On-site scientists conduct long-term research on soil biology, root dynamics, disease management treatments, drought resistance, and invasive pest controls.
Arborist Training & Certification: Serves as a national training ground for field arborists, enforcing International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) standards, OSHA safety compliance, and cutting-edge application techniques.

2. Comprehensive Scientific Tree and Shrub Care Services

Bartlett categorizes its plant healthcare and tree management services into key operational disciplines to ensure plant vitality, structural stability, and safety.

Plant Health Care (PHC) and Disease Management

Bartlett’s Plant Health Care (PHC) programs emphasize proactive monitoring, preventive maintenance, and targeted ecological interventions:

Pest and Disease Control: Managing destructive insect pests (e.g., emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, hemlock woolly adelgid) and fungal/bacterial diseases (e.g., oak wilt, anthracnose, leaf spot) using environmentally responsible formulations.
ROOT Invigorator® Program: A proprietary root-zone soil treatment process that utilizes air excavation tools (Air-Spade) to relieve soil compaction, followed by adding organic soil amendments, mycorrhizal fungi, and slow-release nutrients to restore root health.
Soil Management and Fertilization: Custom soil chemistry adjustments based on diagnostic soil testing, delivering slow-release nutrient mixes directly into the root zone via deep-root injection systems.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Routine site inspections by Certified Arborists to catch pest or disease outbreaks early, minimizing chemical applications through spot treatments and biological controls.

Structural Pruning and Canopy Management

Tree pruning performed by Bartlett follows ANSI A300 industry standards to enhance structural integrity, mitigate hazards, and improve natural beauty:

Developmental Pruning: Pruning young trees to establish strong branch scaffolding, dominant leaders, and proper clearance early in their lifecycle.
Maintenance & Crown Cleaning: Removing deadwood, diseased branches, rubbing limbs, and weak growth throughout the inner canopy to increase airflow and light penetration.
Crown Reduction & Thinning: Selectively shortening outer canopy branches to reduce wind resistance, alleviate weight stress on structural crotches, and lower total tree height safely without topping.
Vista Pruning: Strategic canopy trimming designed to open views while maintaining overall tree health and structural balance.

3. Tree Structural Support, Preservation, and Risk Management

Large, mature, or historical trees often require structural support systems and proactive risk evaluations to prevent structural failure.

Structural Support Systems

Cabling and Bracing: Installing flexible high-strength steel cables in upper canopies and rigid steel brace rods through split trunks or co-dominant stems to limit movement and reduce failure risk during high winds and ice storms.
Lightning Protection Systems: Engineering copper conductor networks along main trunks and high branches to ground electrical currents safely, protecting high-value or historical trees from devastating lightning strikes.

Tree Risk Assessment and Preservation Plans

Tree Risk Assessments: ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) arborists evaluate structural defects, internal rot, lean angles, root plate stability, and surrounding targets (buildings, pedestrian areas) to determine potential failure risks.
Construction Damage Prevention: Creating custom tree protection plans for construction sites, establishing root protection zones (RPZ), specifying soil compaction barriers, and installing trunk protection shields.
Diagnostic Decay Detection: Utilizing advanced non-invasive technologies—such as sonic tomographs and resistance micro-drills—to evaluate internal trunk decay and hollow cavities without damaging living wood tissue.

4. Tree Removal, Stump Grinding, and Emergency Services

When a tree becomes hazardous, dead, or structurally unsalvageable, Bartlett provides safe, controlled removal and site restoration.

Removal Workflows

Complex Tree Removal: Utilizing specialized rigging equipment, mobile cranes, bucket trucks, and trained climbing arborists to dismantle large trees safely in tight urban or residential quarters.
Stump Grinding and Site Reclamation: Mechanized removal of remaining tree stumps below ground level, eliminating trip hazards, preventing root-sprouting, and preparing soil for replanting or turf installation.
24/7 Emergency Storm Response: Rapid deployment crews equipped for clearing fallen trees, clearing hazardous storm debris, and stabilizing damaged trees after severe weather events.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What makes Bartlett Tree Experts different from standard tree trimming services?

Bartlett is a scientific tree care company backed by its own dedicated research laboratory (The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories). Every location is staffed by ISA Certified Arborists who use laboratory-tested diagnostic methods, scientific soil management, and research-backed Plant Health Care (PHC) programs.

What is Bartlett’s ROOT Invigorator® program?

ROOT Invigorator® is a proprietary tree healthcare process. It uses compressed air tools (Air-Spade) to loosen compacted soil around the root zone without damaging roots, followed by applying customized soil amendments, bio-stimulants, and slow-release nutrients to restore declining trees.

How do I know if my tree needs structural cabling or bracing?

If a tree exhibits co-dominant trunks (two main trunks forming a \"V\" shape), deep bark inclusions, or heavy overextended limbs, an arborist can evaluate it for cabling or bracing. Installing high-strength cables limits movement during severe storms, reducing the risk of trunk splitting.

Does Bartlett provide tree care for construction sites?

Yes. Bartlett arborists create comprehensive construction protection plans. They establish root protection zones, advise on grading adjustments, apply protective mulch buffers, and monitor tree health before, during, and after construction activities.

Conclusion

The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company sets the standard in scientific arboriculture by merging field expertise with ongoing laboratory research. Through proactive Plant Health Care programs, precision structural pruning, advanced diagnostic decay detection, and dedicated emergency response, Bartlett helps property owners preserve the longevity, safety, and value of their valuable landscape trees and shrubs.

Disclaimer

Service availability, diagnostic options, equipment deployment, and treatment timing vary depending on local climate conditions, regional pest threats, branch location, and seasonal factors. Property owners should schedule an on-site consultation with a local Bartlett Certified Arborist for tailored property recommendations.
